Meeting Reports--SOUTH EAST BRANCH REPORT

The branch mounted a display at the Geologists Association "Festival of Geology" held at University College London on November 1st 2008. The theme of the display was "Minerals from South East England". Featured were barite "roses" on yellow calcite, pyrite, calcite and calcified teredo borings from the Isle of Sheppey, Kent; gypsum, some specimens enclosing sand from Shelford Quarry, Kent; pyrite nodules and pyritized echinoid from Beachy Head; pyrite nodules and marcasite from Folkestone; and barite and calcite from a long defunct Fullers Earth Quarry at Nutfield, Surrey. The three backboards of the display featured information on the Russell Society, copies of the newsletter and journals and photographs of various mineral localities. The four branch members who set up the display and manned it throughout the event were kept busy answering questions about the Society, and discussing the specimens displayed.
