The interoperability of ticketing system in public transport

In ticketing systems intended to replace paper tickets, information may either be stored directly on a smart card, or in a central system with the card used solely for identification. The requirements for interoperability, or the ability to link different ticketing systems together seamlessly, are seen differently by passengers, operators and designers. Additional applications in parking and motorway toll payment systems are also being studied.
