EGNOS - the position of the airlines and the opinions of other European users

The association representing airlines has declared its opposition to the GPS based EGNOS system (European Geostationary Overlay Service), and has expressed a preference for an independent European system such as Galileo. The airlines are in favour of launching a co-ordinated European research programme concentrating on LAAS (Local Area Augmentation System). In view of the competitive environment in which the airlines and other potential users operate, Galileo will have to be funded from government sources as a public service in the same way as the GPS system is financed by the US federal government.
