POLYMETAL CLEARED TO ACQUIRE MAYSKOYE PROJECT

The Russian government's commission on foreign investment in strategic industries has cleared Polymetal, Russia's biggest silver producer and a major gold producer, to acquire the Mayskoye project in Chukotka. "Polymetal can now launch this gold mining project, which is of key importance to the region," Igor Srtemiyev, head of the Federal Antimonopoly Service, told a briefing shown on the Vesti TV news channel following the commission's meeting. The commission had to endorse the deal because Polymetal has major foreign shareholders, he said.
