摘要

The present demand for high data rates, coupled with the advent of wavelength division multiplexing, has led to a number of developments in the architecture of metropolitan networks. New technologies, including wavelength add / drop and optical network nodes, are now encouraging the migration from electronic to optical systems. The availability of optical fibre with an extremely wide bandwidth is essential in order to respond fully to the challenges imposed by totally optical networks. By eliminating almost all the water content, the new Allwave fibre provides a useable spectrum up to 50 or 60% wider than conventional G652 fibre, opening the door to many more potential applications.
