On an overcast winter's day in the quartier de l'Europe district of Paris, a group of painters is lugubriously surveying 'the job' (the facade of a wine merchant's store). One stands on the pavement, two perch on trestle ladders and a fourth bends down to inspect some detail. They have turned their backs and are studiously ignoring the scene behind them-an austere urban landscape of sharply receding apartment buildings, which loom over a sparsely populated cobbled street. A bonneted woman dressed in grey hurries across the thoroughfare before some distant horse-drawn carriages while two top-hatted gentlemen (flaneurs) [1] stroll towards each other along the pavement. Amidst the melancholic greys, beiges, olives and rusts, the painters offer the only hint of colour [2].
