Surgical and patient outcomes using mechanical bowel preparation before laparoscopic gynecologic surgery: A randomized controlled trial

Preoperative mechanical bowel preparations have been commonly used in open as well as laparoscopic surgery with the presumption that they improve surgical visualization, bowel handling, and lower risks of complications. Such bowel preparations are no longer recommended for patients undergoing open colorectal or urologic surgery because of several reports that they increase patient discomfort and do not reduce anastomotic complication or wound complications. Preoperative preparations are still recommended for laparoscopic colorectal surgery to facilitate manipulation of the bowel and are commonly used before laparoscopic gynecologic surgery. However, there are limited data showing benefits of preoperative mechanical bowel preparation in patients undergoing laparoscopic gynecologic surgery, and none have shown its value for improving surgical field visualization in the deep posterior compartment.
