(Strategies for prenatal detection of chromosome abnormalities have evolved significantly over the past decade. Ultrasound and serum screening, combined with maternal age, currently provide a relatively inexpensive means of population screening for Down syndrome and other aneuploidies. In 2007, ACOG guidelines were presented recommending that all women be offered such screening, regardless of maternal age (Obstet Gynecol. 2007;109:217-227.).
