This history of pottery made in Kershaw County, South Carolina begins with a look at Native American pot tery in the 18th and 19th centuries, then goes on to the establishment of potteries producing English-style wares, including those of John Bartlam and Richard Champion. The latter half of the book focuses on the potteries located in the town of Bethune. "From the mid 1920s to 1980, at least 5 different potteries operated along a 4-mile stretch of Highway 1, with Bethune in the center of this stretch," explain the authors. "Over this 50+ year period, at least 10 different individuals owned these 5 potteries [and employed] at least 15 different potters. ...Collectively, these 15 potters had turned ware in 26 potteries before coming to Bethune. As a group, they represented a vast amount of knowledge, experience and expertise.
