Written by a professor of philosophy, this book "at a minimum…aims to help raise the level of discussion about the decorative arts beyond mere issues of identification and connoisseurship. Many of the canons of contemporary scholarship in the humanities have been trained "on the walls separating high art and popular culture, but strangely, attention given to the decorative arts has benefited little, if at all, from the ensuing demolition." The text is divided into three sections: the first explores the work and lives of obscure Illinois potters Cornwall and Wallace Kirkpatrick (1814-90, 1828-96); the second addresses their influence on Mississippi potter George Ohr; and the third examines Ohr's work.
