The simultaneous development of the surface and underground mining operations in the exploitation of the mineral raw/material resources of OAO KGMK [Open Joint/Stock Society Kol'ski Mining/Metallurgical Company], including the Vostochnyi ore unit of the Pechenga ore body, consisting of the following deposits the Zhdanovskoe, Zapolyarnoe, Tundrovoe, Bystrinskoe, 'Sputnik," Verkhee and Severnye formations - has made it necessary to determine the overall mutual influence of the surface and underground operations.The copperickel deposits of the Pechenga ore field are associated with the basic/ultrabasic (for brevity, hereafter ultrabasic) intrusions, which are concentrated in the limits of the lower-pil'guyarvinsk sub-suite of the Pechenga suite of the Proterozoic age. In the structure of the Vostochnyi ore unit the primary role is that of the differentiated ultrabasic massif of sheet-like trough form, enclosed in metamorphosed tuffogenic/sedimentary rocks, dominant among which are the metatuff-aleurolites, metatuff-sandstones, tuffs, and carbonate tuffs. In contrast with the Zapadnyi ore unit, in the Vostochnyi unit the phyllites are encountered only in the central part of the ore unit (in the form of thin interlayers and lenses), and in the form of seams on the flanks.
