(The obesity epidemic and the diabetes epidemic mirror each other. This is not surprising as obesity is strongly associated with insulin resistance and obesity, and Type 2 diabetes has similar risk factors including increased dietary calories and decreased exercise. Furthermore, it is not surprising that obesity is associated strongly with gestational diabetes. However, not all obese women develop gestational diabetes; rather, only a relatively small minority do by Carpenter-Coustan diagnostic standards (Am J Perinatol. 2011;28: 515-520). However, even these nondiabetic obese patients are at increased risk for perinatal complications, in particular, fetal macrosomia (Am J Obstet Gynecol. 2009;200:672-675).
