This comment contests the conclusions of Vandergeest et al. (Rural Sociology (1999) 64 573-596) in their article on Thai shrimp farming. The comment focuses on: criticisms of the political economy approach; the status of small farms; the role of agribusiness; and the question of ecological and technological limits.
