Oleg Aleksandrovich Bannykh (On His 80th Birthday)

On September 27, 2011, we celebrated the 80th birthday of Academician Oleg Aleksandrovich Bannykh, an outstanding Russian scientist in the field of materials science. After graduating from the Magnitogorsk Mining Metallurgical Institute in 1955, Bannykh became a post-graduate student at the Baikov Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science (IMMS) of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1958, he defended his candidate dissertation dealing with alloying of heat-resistant pearlitic steels. In 1963, he was appointed the head of the Laboratory of Structural Steels and Alloys, and he is still the head of this laboratory to date.
