When I first discovered the French pottery village of La Borne in the autumn of 1990 everyone was talking about the summer's big ceramic meeting, la Borne en Feu (La Borne on Fire). All the potters in the village had fired their wood kilns and also the community-owned nineteenth century kiln in the course of one week. It was an incredible gathering of international potters all drawn by a passion for wood firing. I realised I had missed an amazing event but was not unduly worried as it seemed only a matter of time before another such symposium would be organised.
