Atypical pneumonia--an uncommon presentation of a well-known disease. Diagnosis: Mycobacterium tuberculosis Bronchopneumonia.

A 33-year-old female patient was referred to our intensive care unit 10 days after developing an acute febrile illness associated with progressive respiratory failure. She was initially admitted to a community hospital complaining of a sudden onset of progressive dyspnoea, a non-productive cough and mild diarrhoea. Neither chest pain nor haemoptysis were present on admission. The patient had no significant past medical history and no history of any contact with communicable diseases. She was employed at a local pathology laboratory solely in an administrative capacity and was a non-smoker who did not abuse alcohol.
