Ecotoxicology — application to pollution control and assessment (The Swedish CID system)

Up until the last 10 years, concern about possible environmental effects of complex industrial effluencts in an aquatic environment was generally directed toward clearly observable effects, such as entrophication and fish kills. However, the development of environmental toxicology and chemistry and the experience from chronic and sublethal effect studies with pure compounds in the laboratory have made it clear that the technique must be improved to fit the regulatory work with complex wastewater effluents.
