The protective and/or reactivative effects of protein fraction (AF) from Propionibacterium freudenreichii subsp. shermanii were demonstrated on UV-irradiated cells of various bacteria and yeasts. AF also possessed the protective activity against some environmental stresses other than UV-radiation: heating, exposure to ethanol and divalent cations (Cd2+). The similar effects on UV-irradiated cells were observed with the AF isolated from other bacterial sources than P. shermanii. The data obtained may be of interest for biotechnology of environmental health.
