Many economists are not well versed on the situation in the oil-producing states of the Former Soviet Union, which produced about 21 per cent of the world's oil in 2006 (British Petroleum, 2007); therefore, this publication on the "Economics and Politics of Oil in the Caspian Basin" is a welcomed publication. However, to put the book into context, it is important to understand the recent economic situation in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan-two predominant oil producers in the Caspian Basin and the principal countries examined in "The Economics and Politics of Oil in the Caspian Basin: The Redistribution of Oil Revenues in Azerbaijan and Central Asia."
