The advent of intraoperative imaging in vitreoretinal surgery.

The continuing evolution in vitreoretinal surgical instrumentation and techniques has improved anatomic and visual outcomes for retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, and other surgical conditions. A primary driver behind much of this progress has been improved intraoperative visualization because of enhanced wide-field optical viewing systems and endoillumination capabilities. Selective tissue visualization with an increasing array of agents, such as indocyanine green, triamcinolone, trypan blue and brilliant blue, facilitates identification of the internal limiting membrane, vitreous remnants, and periretinal proliferation, which allows for more precise tissue dissection.
