Effect of zinc, iron and split application of nitrogen on growth, yield of durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) and on available nutrient status in soil

A field experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2002-03 on deep vertisol at Research and Development Farm, Ugar Khurd, Belgaum district of Karnataka state.The results of the study indicated that highest total dry matter (DM) production (247.6 g/m row length), plant height (95.7 cm), number of effective tillers/m~2 (259) due to combined application of Zn @ 25 kg/ha and Fe @ 25 kg/ha, which also accounted for maximum number of grains per earhead (43.9), weight of grains per earhead (2.00 g) and1000-grain weight (44.7 g). Grain and straw yields were highest (42.23 and 68.79 q/ha, respectively) with the combined application of Zn @ 25 kg/ha and Fe @ 25 kg/ha and it was least (37.83 and 62.51 q/ha, respectively) in control (RDF+FYM). Combined application of Zn @ 25 kg/ha and Fe @ 25 kg/ha recorded significantly lower available nitrogen (204.31 kg/ ha), higher available zinc and iron (2.440 and 4.600 ppm, respectively) over control. Among split application of nitrogen, nitrogen applied as /12 basal+% 30 DAS+% 60 DAS recorded maximum DM production (240.0 g/m row length), plant height (94.55 crn), number of effective tillers/m~2 (256), number of grains/earhead (42.7) and 1000-grain weight (44.4 g). Grain and straw yields were significantly more (41.4 and 67.47 q/ha, respectively) with nitrogen applied as 1A basal+'A 30 DAS+Vi 60 DAS as compared to nitrogen applied as % basal+Va 30 DAS (38.9^ and 63.50 q/ha, respectively). Nitrogen applied as % basalt 30 DAS recorded significantly higher availablenitrogen in soil (220.95 kg/ha), over nitrogen applied as Vz basal+% 30 DAS+% 60 DAS, whereas the available zinc and iron content did not differ significantly due to split application of nitrogen.
