An experiment was conducted in Bilwara, Rajasthan, India, during the kharif of 2001 and 2002 to study the effects of FYM [farmyard manure], 90 kg N + 30 kg P + 30 kg K/ha (50, 75 or 100%), Azotobacter and Azotobacter + phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) on the performance of maize (cv. Navjot). The application of fertilizers improved the negative balance in N, P and K by 14.43, 4.31 and 9.91 kg/ha compared to the control, respectively. The N, P and K status of the soil improved by 2.78, 4.31 and 8.56 kg/ha with the soil application of 10 t FYM/ha, by 0.36, 4.75 and 11.23 kg/ha with the application of 100% of the recommended fertilizer rates, and by 4.76, 2.13 and 1.69 kg/ha with the seed inoculation of Azotobacter + PSB, respectively, over the lower levels of these fertilizers.
