Monitored Natural Attenuation Forum: Environmental Remediation Applications of Molecular Biological Tools

In this issue of Remediation, the Monitored Natural Attenuation (MNA) Forum focuses on the applications of molecular biological tools (MBTs) and how they relate to MNA. The column begins with highlights from a workshop convened by the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program in August 2005. Topics discussed include the potential benefits of MBTs, current applications, and future research needs. To foster further discussion, we presented the following question to members of the MNA panel: Can molecular biological tools improve our ability to select and monitor MNA approaches, and if so, how? Please address specifically whether MBTs can improve our ability to predict and measure rates of degradation and attenuation capacities.
