Food waste is, as yet, a largely untapped resource in terms of recycling. According to WRAP figures it accounts for up to 19% of the household waste stream but only 5% of this waste is processed. The rest goes to landfill and is subject to landfill taxes, when, in fact, it could be utilised to create useful outputs such as fertiliser and energy.Dr Nina Sweet, anaerobic digestion technical specialist at WRAP, believes that anaerobic digestion (AD) is fundamental if we are going to increase recycling rates because food waste in the one piece of the "recycling jigsaw" that the UK has not made significant progress on.
