Natural refrigerants can play an important, environmental and energy-efficient part in the cool chain that ensures the food we all buy from caterers and retailers is as fresh and safe as possible, says Eurammon, the European initiative for natural refrigerants. Thomas Spanich, an executive board member of Eurammon, says: "Thanks to the thermodynamic properties of ammonia, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons, this type of system is very energy-efficient. Natural refrigerants are thus not only of interest to operators as an environmentally friendly alternative, they also offer economic benefits and cut operating costs."
