TODAY, WE ALL EXPECT rail carriages to be comfortable - indeed we complain vociferously if they are not. But it hasn't always been this way. In. 1935, the LNER published a famous poster, 'Then and Now', contrasting the sleek modern elegance of a contemporary dining car with the Victorian hugger-mugger of an 1835 open carriage. Admittedly the picture was exaggerated - those well-dressed Victorian passengers wouldn't have travelled in an open third, even in 1835, but the differences in overall comfort across the intervening century were undeniable. But how did it come about? Pullman created travel comfort for those who could afford his supplements, and Nagelmackers invented the luxury of the original Orient Express. But who thought of making rail interiors comfortable for the ordinary Joe? The answer lies with three men: John Ellis, James Allport and Tom Clayton, all of whom were working for the UK's Midland Railway in the latter part of the 19th century.
