ARE YOU SITTING COMFORTABLY? - The author ponders how train interior designers can better interact with passengers to understand their needs. Comfort is near the top of the agenda
TRAVEL HAS BECOME A way of life in todays post industrial society. The commute to work is now an economic necessity for many of us. The choice of public transport or private car is often driven by cost and reliability and, emotionally, is a means to an end. Here the concept of comfort has to fit within restricted financial boundaries. The joy of travelling is left to leisure activities, going away on holiday say or even just for the fun of it. Here the priorities change. We look forward to the journey experience as a life affirming activity and the choice of who we travel with, the type of journey and mode of transport are much more subjective. The influencing factors become more personal and open to a wide range of cultural and emotional preferences.
