How ageing M5 double-deck trains were given a new lease of life to rival their M6 siblings. The M5 model was the first double-deck train to serve Belgian passengers when they were introduced in 1986/87 by operator SNCB/NMBS. However, the introduction of the M6 double-deck train on Belgian rail in 2001 rendered its forerunner outdated and uncomfortable in comparison. Passenger surveys revealed that some travellers chose to wait for the next train if an M5 showed up on their route. The Bombardier-manufactured M6 (co-designed with Enthoven Associates and DCA from 1995 to 2001) set a new benchmark for double-deck design. It incorporated a large number of spatial and subjective improvements designed to take on the typical shortcomings of a double-deck train - creating a feeling of space on board and enhanced movement between platform and decks. The design of the M6 proved its worth when Bombardier successfully secured the order from SNCB/NMBS.
