Ileal and faecal digestibilities of raw and gelatinized starch from wheat and tapioca were compared in 12 adult Beagle dogs separated into 2 groups. The measurement of ileal digestibilities was performed in 4 dogs fitted with a simple T cannula. ThepH of the ileal digesta and the faeces were measured. The basal diets were formed using a balanced moist diet rich in animal proteins to which was added the source of starch (about 50% of DM), providing 22 g dry matter/kg live weight and 4.8 g crude protein/kg live weight. Gelatinization had no effect on faecal and ileal digestibilities of wheat starch but improved that of tapioca starch. Faecal digestibility of raw tapioca starch was 98.4% compared with 100%, 100% and 99.8% for raw wheat starch, gelatinized wheat starch and gelatinized tapioca starch, respectively. Ileal digestibility of raw tapioca starch (57.6%) was also lower (P<0,5) than that of the other sources of starch (99.4%, 98.0% and 97.4% for raw wheat starch, gelatinized wheat starch andgelatinized tapioca starch respectively). Ileal pH decreased with time after the meal and reached a value similar to that for the faeces. The intensity of the reduction was greater for diets with untreated starch.
