Everyone told me that having a child of my own would drastically change my life. Yet having my little bundle of joy not only changed my personal life, it also affected my professional outlook.As a computed tomography (CT) technologist working in a pediatric hospital for 5 years, patient exposure to radiation always has been very important to me when performing CT scans. All our CT protocols are set to parameters that reduce patient exposure to radiation and I always have used lead aprons as appropriate to shield my patients. These precautions come naturally to me and are part of an everyday routine. After so long, it just became a habit. I wouldn't even notice when I shielded a patient; I just did it. It felt like I could perform limited-exposure CT scans in my sleep.
