Food banks recycle cell phones

Toronto, ON-The Canadian Association of Food Banks (CAFB) has set up a program to collect and recycle used cell phones. With Petro-Canada as national sponsor, the Phones-for-Food program will encourage members of the public to throw their inactive cell phones into designated drop boxes, rather than the garbage. The phones are then recycled, with local food banks receiving the proceeds. The millions of out-of-service cell phones stockpiled or thrown out by Canadian homes and offices contain toxic elements such as arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, antimony, lead and mercury.
