Toronto announces ambitious diversion plans

Toronto. ON-Toronto's Solid Waste Resources Diversion Task Force has issued its report proposing a three-stream residential waste system to divert 60 per cent of household solid waste by the end of 2006. The system will be phased-in for the city's 450,000 single-family units beginning in the spring of 2002. A working group will be established to develop an implementation program. It will report in September 2001 on a variety of issues, including adaptation of the system for apartment buildings.The three steams will be dry recyclables, organics and garbage. There will be a weekly co-collection, with organics and dry recyclables collected one week, and organics and garbage collected the following week. Residents would be provided with a bin for organics. Recyclables would be set out using the current blue and grey boxes. Garbage would be bagged.
