Ramifications of US BSE case: Although only one case of BSE has been confirmed in a US cow, and this animal has now been traced back to a farm in Alberta, Canada, US traders and exporters have been shaken by the chaos which has ensued on their markets. Soya bean prices had already been rising steeply but there is now speculation that more beans may be needed in feed because MBM may be banned from pig and poultry rations. A wide range of countries are still applying a ban on imports of US beef, and the authorities appear to be embarrassed by the fact that they have been unable to identify a calf born to the infected cow.
