Treating pulmonary tuberculosis during the early to middle 20th century was difficult. Eventually, adjunctive surgical techniques were developed, particularly to treat cavitary disease. These surgical techniques included exci-sional surgery, cavitary drainage and collapse therapy. The morbidity and intraoperative mortality associated with these procedures were high, especially when upper lobe cavities persisted and patients were unable to tolerate lung resection. This prompted the development of new surgical techniques, one of which was extrapleural pneumonolysis - sometimes referred to as plombage therapy.
