The exam not only can confirm a viable pregnancy, but also can confirm heartbeat, gestational age, or ectopic pregnancies. Ectopic pregnancies, sometimes called tubal pregnancies, occur in 1 out of 50 pregnancies. An ultrasound imaging examination is often the best method to diagnose these pregnancies.
