Effects of feeding biotin to dairy cattle were investigated on milk production and composition. 40 Holstein cows were fed a 38% concentrate diet based on corn silage with or without 20 mg biotin/day from 15 days before calving to 120 days after calving. Milk fatty acid profiles were analysed at wks 3 and 10. Biotin supplementation increased milk production in multiparous cows, decreased protein content, had no impact on milk fat content, increased levels of C16:1 at wk 3 and increased levels of cis-9 C18:1 at wks 3 and 10. Analysis of various plasma parameters suggested that the impact of biotin on milk composition was related to higher lipid mobilisation from from adipose tissue, driven by increased milk production.
