Effects of lactation stage were investigated on the fat and cholesterol contents and the fatty acid composition of colostrum and milk from Wielkopolska mares. Milk samples were collected from day 0 to 5 months of lactation. As lactation time increased, contents of fat and cholesterol in the milk decreased. Significant changes were also observed in ratios of n-6 to n-3 PUFA. Based on these observations, it is suggested that the nutritional quality of mares' milk is optimal between months 4 and 5 of lactation.
