The allelopathic effects of L. ovalifolia leaf leachate (LL) on Sesamum orientale [S. indicum], Eleusine coracana and Cajanus cajan were studied. LL was prepared from the powder of dried leaf samples (1.0, 2.5 or 5.0 g) mixed with distilled water (100.0 ml). LL stimulated and slightly inhibited germination when applied at 2.5 and 5.0%, respectively. The greatest (23.25%) and lowest (1.89%) increases in seed germination were recorded for E. coracana and C. cajan treated with 1.0% LL, respectively. LL markedly reduced radicle length in S. orientale and E. coracana only. The reduction in radicle elongation increased with increasing LL concentration (69.21, 53.25 and 23.50% in S. orientale, E. coracana and C. cajan at 5.0% LL, and 26.05, 29.59 and 8.10% in S. orientale, E. coracana and C. cajan at 1.0% LL). In S. orientale, E. coracana and C. cajan, the reduction in plumule length was greatest (49.45, 13.69 and 25.21%) at 5.0 LL and lowest (10.16, 4.18 and 9.09%) at 1.0 LL. The variation among the LL concentrations was significant for S. orientale, but not for E. coracana and C. cajan.
