International Liver Transplantation Society 2009 Presidential Address: The Internationalization of Liver Transplantation

For the theme of my presidential address, I have chosen to speak about the elements that most characterize our society and make it unique. I needed to look no further than our name: the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS; Fig. 1). I shall be describing how liver transplantation became international, how the contributions to our field came from diverse geographical locations and backgrounds, and finally how, in its 19 years of existence, our society has facilitated this internationalization.
