Hydrodynamic power transmission received great impetus in recent years, triggered by the procurement programs for locomotives and railcars of both privately-owned and State railways. This article first looks at a number of representative examples of current transmissions, and then presents three new transmissions which have been developed by Voith Turbo: in the medium power range, i.e. from 300 to 400 kW the new three-speed transmission T 212 bre for underfloor drive systems of railcars; in the lower power range, i.e. from 200 to 300 kW the new drive concept "Voith Shortpack"; and the most powerful transmission for locomotives on the market to date, the L 620 re, which is capable of transmitting up to 2300kW.
