A field experiment was conducted during 2000-02 at the Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute, Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, to study the root distribution pattern of fodder trees by using logarithmic spiral trench method. The study was carried out in 18-year old silvopastoral systems: Acacia tortilis+Cenchrus ciliaris; Leucaena leucocephala+Panicum maximum; Hardwickia binata+Sehima nervosum; Albizia amara+Cenchrus ciliaris and Albizia lebbeck+Sehima nervosum established in 1982. Root density decreased significantly with the increase in depth from 10-30 cm. Root density was highest in Albizia amara and lowest in Albizia lebbeck. The pattern of biomass accumulation in roots varied significantly among species and depths. The root biomass (up to a depth of 0-30 cm) was found to be highest in Albizia lebbeck (2583 g) and lowest in H. binata (713 g).
