FORAGE PRODUCTION AND NUTRITIVE VALUE OF BOTHRIOCHLOA GRASSLAND COMMUNITY IN BUNDELKHAND REGION, INDIA

In present communication, an attempt has been made to gather and compare the information on the quantification of forage production and its nutritive value for the future research and management of grasslands in Bundelkhand region (U.P.), India. The results of production analysis indicate that the grasses constitute the major compartment and contribute about 96% of the total forage value. The legumes and forbs form a negligible part i.e. 2.5 and 1.8% as low yielders. In general, monthly forage valueranges between 681 to 1522 g/m~2. Corresponding with the seasonal distribution of rainfall the total dry forage production was observed maximum of 965 g/m~2 in rainy season and minimum of 79 g/m2 in summer with a total annual production of 1241 g/m~2. Forage production potential and nutritive evaluation (crude protein, fat, fibre, ash and carbohydrate) studies reveal that the present grassland is more superior compared to some other grasslands in India.
