Agroforestry is an age old practice in the north-eastern hill region of India, where trees are exploited extensively in the crop and livestock production system according to the agroclimate and other local conditions. In order to identify appropriateagroforestry systems for different locations in the region and to improve them for higher productivity and better economic returns, attempts were made at ICAR Research Complex for N.E.H. Region, Barapani(980 msl, 2428 mm av. annual rainfall). Nine agroforestry systems as model Viz. silviculture, silvipasture, silvihorticulture, agrisilviculture, agrihorticulture, agroaquaculture and sericulture based agroforestry systems, agrisericulture, serihortipastoral and paddy cum sericulture were developed and are being evaluated for their productivity and sustainability. The sericulture based agroforestry systems combine soil conservation and income as well as employment generation are preferred by marginal and small farmers. Thus, these models enumerated herecould be successfully advocated for identical soil and climatic conditions.
