San Saba - pecan capital of the world

San Saba County boasts of producing cattle, hay and deer, but it's the pecan that really put San Saba on the map. Historians say these pecan trees existed in San Saba before the earliest settlers came and were used as a cash crop as early as 1857. Edmond E. Risien planted the first known pecan orchard around 1870. Now San Saba County produces 2-5 million pounds of pecans annually. Since many orchards around San Saba produce pecans, the town has many related companies such as Alamo Pecan and Coffee Company, R. B. Bagley & Sons, Doner Pecan Company, Great San Saba River Pecan Company, Oliver Pecan Company, San Saba Pecan, Inc., and Texcan Pecans. Shawn Oliver (whose family owns Oliver Pecan Company) says, "The 2001 crop will be high in quantity."
