Maintaining and improving the level of service provided by a railway line and, more generally, by a railway system, requires interventions to be made to the system components (infrastructure, rolling stock and operation). Given that alternative interventions can be numerous, and that all require a new set of adjustments to the parameters of the system, as well as time-consuming calculations, the use of proper software tools that provide a preview of the effectiveness of the interventions adopted becomes essential. In this article, the extent of travel time reduction following specific interventions to the infrastructure, rolling stock and operation of both a virtual and an existing railway line is investigated, using the software tool "Train Movement Simulator".
