This study was conducted to examine the impact of people's participation on the beneficiaries' knowledge related to watershed management practices in Jammu district, India. Data were gathered by interviewing 400 respondents from the areas of the two watersheds (participatory and non-participatory). It was observed that farmers' possessed 42.78 and 67.14% knowledge on soil and water conservation practices in non-participatory and participatory watershed areas, respectively. A bumper crop was harvested in the field of participatory farmers, which explain the role of people's participation in crop production. It was also observed that large farmers showed more interest in gardening due to higher knowledge level compared to others. Knowledge on pasture development and vaccination of animals was 44.33 and 37.48% in watershed 1 and 2, respectively. Very poor knowledge (25.26%) was observed in case of recommended varieties of fodder and balance feeding of animals (35.66%) in case of watershed 1. A highly significant 't' (4.408857) value indicated positive role of people participation in watershed management. It is suggested that in development programme, people participation must be increased to achieve the desired goal and overall development of the farming community.
