ANNUAL AND SEASONAL CLIMATIC VARIABILITY IN A SEMI-ARID REGION

The thirty years (1970-2000) daily rainfall and temperature data of Jhansi was examined for establishing long term averages of annual, seasonal and their temporal variability by deploying appropriate statistical techniques. Three distinct crop growthseasons of kharif (26-41 SMW), rabi (42-15 SMW) and summer (16-25 SMW) were characterized for seasonal trends. The start, end, length of rainy season and stable rainfall period was worked out. Results revealed that the annual and kharif rainfall showed areduction in the amount in recent decade (1991-2000). Trend analysis reflected a decrease of 2.25 and 2.0 mm/year in annual and kharif season respectively during past 30 years whereas no such specific trend was observed for rabi and summer seasons. Themean temperature variability exhibited small standard deviation and coefficient of variation indicating only minor year to year variations. However, during recent decade, the minimimum temperature showed an increase of 0.12 and 0.21°C/ year during annual and kharif season respectively. The maximum temperature did not reflect any specifictrends during different seasons.
