An experiment was conducted in Garhwal, Uttar Pradesh, India, to examine the effect of different temperature, pretreatments and soil types on germination and growth of Rheum emodi, Saussaurea lappa [Saussurea lappa] and Potentilla fulgens [Potentilla siemersiana]. Germination of all 3 species was better at 25 degrees C. R. emodi had faster germination under chilling treatment for 7 days and 100 ppm GA3 treatment was best for S. lappa and P. fulgens. Chilling for 7 days compared to other treatments enhanced the cumulative germination in all 3 species. Germination and growth response of R. emodi was better in forest soil, however, S. lappa and P. fulgens were superior in arable soil. The results suggest that all 3 species should grow satisfactorily under traditional agricultural systems of tropical-temperate regions. However, mature seeds of these species need to be kept for a few days under chilling environment prior to seed sowing in the nursery beds..
