Study of different agroforestry systems practiced in the Vellore district, Tamil Nadu.

This paper analyses the existing agroforestry systems in the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu, India, and examines the suitable agroforestry models to meet the fuel and fodder scarcity along with the improvement of the socioeconomic status of the people. The different parameters considered include: the distribution of land holdings; distribution of family size; growth observations of important trees available in the study area; and farmers' preference on trees and its usage ranking. The predominant agroforestry systems in the area comprise teak-, casuarinas- and eucalyptus-based agrisilvicultural systems. Bund planting of neem, babul, tamarind, pungam, prosopis, terminalia and palmyra are also common to meet the local fuel and fodder requirement.
