Green fodder and fertility improvement of rainfed land under silvi-pastoral system in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

This study was conducted during 2001-03 on developed silvopastoral systems under rainfed condition in two eastern districts (Basti and Barabanki) of Uttar Pradesh, India. The experiment comprised of four treatments with five replications in a randomized block design. Each of the four treatments had similar combinations of woody perennials (Dalbergia sissoo + Sesbania sesban) on field bunds; however, each of the four alleys (field treatments) had different fodder intercrops: (1) Stylosanthes hamata; (2) Vigna unguiculata; (3) Zea mays; and (4) V. sinensis [V. unguiculata]. The green fodder yield amongst the different field treatments was maximum in Z. mays (27.9-28.1 t ha-1; Basti vs. Barabanki district) followed by Stylosanthes hamata (22 t ha-1; Basti) or V. unguiculata (26.7 t ha-1; Barabanki). Pollarded biomass obtained from Sesbania sesban (a hedge species on field bund) during 2003 did not show any clear-cut pattern across treatments in Basti (8.7-9.7 t ha-1) as well as Barabanki district (9.1-9.5 t ha-1). During the same period, the pruned biomass of D. sissoo was 1.0-1.2 t ha-1 across different treatments in Basti district. However, it was a little higher (1.7-1.9 t ha-1) in the case of the Barabanki district. The soil under the silvopastoral systems showed a marked improvement in soil characters from the year 2001 to 2003..
